Breaking News: Orange Man Afraid of Parrots
pet passing
One of my two 13 year old tuxedo cats, Abigale, had to be put down today. I will always love her, and will miss her dearly.
Comparing genAI use to rolling coal? You know the next step after we get rid of all the datacenters will be to get rid of gaming PCs. You're not hosting your Mastodon server in a datacenter, are you? You should be hosting it on a nice, energy friendly Raspberry Pi. Or at the very least, shared hosting with your whole neighborhood living on the same instance.
Re: Coding for a code base you don't fully understand:
I have to refresh my memory regularly for my own dang code bases I've been working on for a decade or more. I do not have instant recall of every single minute detail. Maybe that's the sign that I should hand the reigns to someone younger and saner and go farm goats in the hills.
Or maybe not.
Why is my timeline repeating everything from yesterday all over again? It seems like an endless feedback loop of AI discourse.
Is it bad that, in any argument involving someone I know rather well, I automatically side with the person I know over the relative nobody they got into a fight with? And then feel the need to vacate communities completely when this relative nobody is being invited to them one by one?
I have finally figured out that I am a cishet neurotypical person. I must be, because the queers and the neurodivergent are hard wired to hate LLMs and other generative AI things.
That must be why, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, I tried to use search engines by feeding them natural language prompts instead of intuitively knowing how to make the most out of boolean operators. Why, in the early 1990s and late 1980s, I tried to program my first Basic program by telling the computer what to do in plain English in what turned out to be comment statements.
What I've been poking at for the past 10 days: SpessaSynth, a C port: https://github.com/kode54/spessasynth_core_c
Yes, there's some vibe code in it, but it's mostly language translation work. I had to make much of it work manually, and later only resorted to using the bot if I was seriously stumped. But I'm out of budget for the month after just 10 days, and it looks like it's mostly ready now anyway.
Feel free to run it through its paces, offer up some suggestions for improvements, etc.
I still need to backport the sflist support to the upstream original project, but I don't know what to do about that.
childish
Why do Intel CPUs have a peepee package?
Love the new Democratic party petition scare emails.
$NAME, our deadline is TONIGHT at 11:59PM - and you are the only Democrat in your city who hasn't responded!
Somehow, the arpeggios throughout Jesper Kyd's Beyond the Biodome, from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, remind me of the arpeggios from The Serpent's Trench from Final Fantasy VI. Weird. #jesperkyd #nobuouematsu #borderlands #finalfantasy #finalfantasyvi
Fuck you too, Apple! #advanceddataprotection #apple #security
Advanced Data Protection, my ass! Guess it's too late to snatch my data back now that Apple belongs to Trump.
Reading about Escitalopram, and I see something: Hyponatremia, or low blood sodium level. Would that possibly explain why I occasionally have episodes where I feel I have to rapidly binge on high sodium foods? Google is next to useless and immediately leaps to eating disorders.
Whee, Discord client has major bugs when displaying channels which are almost entirely consisting of blocked people messaging nonstop. Like, it doesn't know what to do when there's 55 messages in a row from a blocked person all being collapsed, as it tries to perpetually unload and reload them.
Gee, Abigale, my little kitty, does the bunny thumping thing sometimes, usually at my bedroom chair mat. She'll be trying to get my attention, and when it isn't working, thump-thump-thump-thump goes her foot on the plastic mat in rapid succession. #cabbit
Like, what would anyone think of a family of three physically and/or mentally disabled people, consisting of retirees and a NEET, wanting to move out of the US? Plus their two cats. Would anyone even be willing to host a family unit like this?
Our entire income consists of a US based pension, a US based mutual fund, Social Security for two, and SSI for one. We're currently residing in a nice house, which is probably half or more paid off, with a mortgage payment that's significantly less than any of the average rents in the area.
Can three people and their pets just move to Canada or Europe or somewhere else, and still collect benefits instead of having to find jobs? What about prescriptions for existing diagnosed issues, which have been treated for ages now?
If not, I don't see us ever leaving this housing situation or moving anywhere this lifetime. We've been at this address since 2001, and we'll probably still be here when shit hits the fan, or doesn't.
When I wanted the Something Awful forums to slide to the left politically, I wasn't expecting that they'd end up firmly in tankie territory. The resident tankies in the politics forum are now chain probing me for being a fool in the Ukraine topic.
Apparently, it's rife with the kinds of tankies who are all firmly of the opinion that it would be great to visit Russia some day, and that the Ukraine military is overwhelmingly a bunch of fascists, and you have to be some sort of shitlib to think otherwise.
JFC getting automod on my ass for saying the word "whore" on a Discord server. Clearly not enough people reading Heinlein and Piers Anthony in their teens.
Like, seriously, for my dad, blatant sex in books was "in one ear and out the other", basically just skip over this and forget it even happened. Then pass the book on to your kids, they'll love it.
Why the FUCK do subreddits have minimum karma requirements? Do I have to pay someone to bot my karma up so I can participate like all the other low effort posters who are posting on said sub?
My first account, I only got 850 karma after literally 5+ years of using the site. People did not customarily upvote my posts when replying to them, like I always customarily upvoted every single reply in a thread that I happened to like.
What is this shitty site? Why does it matter so much?
