Okay, so my parents' local newspaper seriously referenced avocado toast in a full backpage ad to drive up subscriptions.

A full page newspaper ad, captioned, "A month's subscription to the Press-Enterprise, THE SUN and the Daily Bulletin equals the cost of one of these:" followed by a picture of avocado toast. The rest follows, "One will make you hip. The other will make you smart. The fact is, quality journalism can't be done on the cheap. Scoops. Insight. Context. These take time and talent. And that costs money-which is where you come in.

If you already subscribe, thank you.

If you value local news, won't you show your support with a monthly subscription?

Because otherwise, hometown newspapers like ours will be toast."

Then follows their slogan, "Local. News. Matters."
