So, fun story. I found out from developers related to the Intel Linux DRM ecosystem, specifically dealing with the Xe KMD, have found that the UAPI has padding issues that break 32-bit userspace on 64-bit kernels. What I didn't know was that this was discovered a whole month ago, and that a patch changing things is in review limbo right now.
I have since changed things slightly, by patching the missing compat_ioctl function for 32-bit userspace to reach the basic DRM functions, and first by applying my own xe_drm.h patch, then applying the already proposed one. Result: Now I have working 64-bit and 32-bit userspace OpenGL and Vulkan on the Xe KMD.
Not so hot: Some things are still broken, and some of it isn't related to the Xe KMD. The KMD doesn't have functioning VA-API yet, with an unmerged PR against intel-media-driver, marked "do not merge", mainly because it hard codes a lot, and doesn't detect which driver it should be using.
Also, some OpenGL consuming apps crash on Iris, but not on Zink now, and this is not related to the Xe KMD. Firefox and most web browsers outright crash except on Zink, but on Iris under i915, Firefox has a lovely bug where some web pages or cursor changing sites can cause the whole Gnome Shell compositor to crash back to login if I'm screencasting, which is also something I do most days. I'll attempt to bisect that one possibly in the evening hours of today, since I don't have any major issues going on right now.
Gnome Control Center also crashes on Iris Xe KMD, but not i915. This may or may not be the same bug affecting Firefox. It does launch properly if started with Zink enabled. Too bad Zink isn't capable of running a full desktop yet, if things are going to continue bugging up like this.
Mutual Aid Request
We're still looking for help with our fundraiser. https://gofund.me/86e7c8c7
Bed time for bonzo. I really need some sleep and to take some time off this feed of mine.
Is it bad that I expect all Bluetooth devices for computers to have extended range, so I have the freedom of using my Bluetooth headphones from anywhere in the house? All it took to get that on a PC was a USB adapter with a little 2 inch pole antenna that mounts to it. Is it bad I want a Mac mini that looks more like the Netgear Nighthawk? They can even make the whole thing out of plastic for all I care.
Intel isn't selling their Arc cards "at cost". Everyone else is just price gouging, because corpos gonna corpo.
Mutual Aid Request
Some more bills came, we could use some more help toward the original goal. https://gofund.me/fc2d66ff #mutualaid #mutualaidrequest
(I somehow still take for granted that not many people would want to fly by the seat of their pants and just install GPU drivers that have unmerged upstream changes applied against them on their primary daily use machine.)
Hey, remember that one time I had an account on Vulpine Club? It got rugpulled on me one day because I did a stupid once and they decided the best course of action was immediate suspension. If there was any warning for past actions before that, I probably didn't remember it anyway. You know, because I already have trouble enough remembering what happened last week.
Sorry for the noise, everyone.
Help us out, my boyfriend came down with COVID, and can't complete a job that would have paid out this month or so. https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-us-out-after-loss-of-a-job?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cf+share-flow-1 #mutualaid
death threat mention
Cool, it's been a whole four years since I've gotten one of these. It was screened, but apparently it said something about how I'd "make a nice ceiling decoration"? Probably means that I've got a whole "admirer" who keeps coming back.
Okay, I am swapping my DRAM-less M.2 drive, which I probably paid too little for so I deserve, from being a Linux boot volume, to being storage for my Mac.
The procedure will go as follows:
- export the ZFS storage in the Mac so it won't try to auto mount it later
- power off the Mac
- swap the SN750 from the Mac enclosure into the PC where my Windows drive currently lives (motherboard M.2 slot)
- boot Linux again from the x16 slotted DRAM-less Crucial drive
- go about my desktop business and read some shit while I use
zfs sendto back up the SN750 to my spinny things - reboot to my last used Arch live media with ZFS support
clonezillathe Crucial drive to the SN750- zap the Crucial drive so it can't boot
- boot back into the now SN750'd Linux
zpool createa featureless volume on the Crucial drive againzfs recvthe Mac backup back onto it while I go about my business- shut down the PC again
- remove the Crucial drive from the PCIe slot adapter and stuff the Samsung 980 Pro Windows drive back in its place
- power back on and go about my business
- restore the Mac with its new cheapass drive
(subtoot) What's with all the computer into volcano commentary? I just install my updates, sometimes multiple times daily. My Linux machine never really manages to gain an uptime over 24 hours, because there's always a systemd or a kernel or a firmware or a zfs update, every day, no fail.
I must admit today's kernel update was great, though, because it added a workaround for an fTPM bug that MSI didn't bother to fix for me with their AGESA 1.2.0.7 update from last July. Now my system doesn't halt randomly during startup of my desktop session.
Okay, that's it. I'm no longer going to support legacy operating systems with any of my software. If your machine can't run expressly the very latest of whatever OS I choose to support at all, then I'll ignore you. I cannot be expected to run old OSes, even if Apple drops support for my machines. I'll either use third party hacks to dodge those blocks and install the latest anyway, or I'll just throw my damn machine in the trash and boot something that doesn't lose support after only three years.
Cool, so my two older brothers are visiting us tomorrow. They're both just coming from having visited Disneyland today. They're also likely to not have worn masks at all for their park outing, or for their visit to us. They'll be arriving just as the time we usually eat lunch, but they'll already have had their own lunch.
Can't wait to finally get COVID after avoiding it for the entire pandemic thus far.
I will die on the hill that I will always explain things I just learned 5 minutes ago like I'm the foremost expert on the subject, to the person who is the foremost expert on the subject. It lets me pretend I actually know anything useful. I also love hearing things explained to me repeatedly, because I will probably forget those things by the time I hear them again, even if they're the most interesting things in the world to me. I have to Google things constantly to remind myself how to do anything useful any more. I also don't get jokes. Don't feign ignorance on a subject you don't want me to explain at great length like you were born yesterday. And even if you told me that you've been around the world for as long as I have, I'll probably forget that in the span it takes me to write this sentence. I only have room in my life for that kind of knowledge on like the 2 people I live with and the one I spend video calls with every day. And for future reference, I should probably restrict my personal interaction to just those three people, for the good of the rest of society. Lord knows, I have enough trouble having a meltdown like this every few weeks.
twitter still sinking
Cool cool.

I must be wackadoodle. From hearing the song Platinum by Big Freedia while watching or playing Forza Horizon 5, I mishear the wackiest lyrics:
Where the song goes:
Like huh huh
Gimme a polish
Shiny like a ring
Like a mil-e-yun dollars
I hear:
Just like
Jimmy Depalma
Pissin' like a racehorse
on company time
